Clemens lawyer attacks key piece of evidence

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) – Attacking key prosecution evidence, Roger Clemens’ lawyer went through the items in a Miller Lite beer can one at a time and tried to cast doubt on the syringes and medical waste allegedly used to inject the famous pitcher with performance-enhancing drugs.Attorney Rusty Hardin expressed shock when Clemens’s chief accuser Brian McNamee acknowledged that some of the items in the can had been used to inject other players.McNamee, Clemens’ longtime strength coach, had testified he collected the materials after injecting Clemens with steroids.“Haven’t you testified that everything in the beer can was for Roger?” Hardin asked.”Isn’t this a classic example of you making up this stuff on the fly?”Although Hardin expressed shock that some items in the beer can were not used on Clemens, McNamee told congressional investigators the same thing in 2008, prior to the U.S.House committee hearing in which he and Clemens testified. The 11-time All-Star pitcher is charged with perjury for telling Congress that he never used steroids or human growth hormone adjustable snapback hats.Hardin demanded to know how materials from other players “flew” into the beer can. When prosecutors objected, the lawyer said, “Well, how did they get in there?”“I put them in the can that night” after injecting Clemens, McNamee said. When Hardin asked if McNamee ever told government investigators that he put the other players’ material in the beer can that night, McNamee said not specifically “that night. It’s never been asked that way before.”McNamee is the only witness who will claim firsthand knowledge of Clemens using performance-enhancing drugs, and he never wavered from that central accusation during Hardin’s cross-examination.McNamee endured a fifth day Friday of questioning. He’s now spent some 24 hours in the swivel chair between jury and judge.McNamee will return to the stand Monday in a trial moving so slowly that U.S.District Judge Reggie Walton – for the first time in more than 30 years as a judge – imposed time limits to speed things up: Only 90 minutes per side for witnesses after McNamee and closing arguments limited to two hours apiece.“I just can’t let this case meander on forever,” the judge said. The trial was supposed to last four to six weeks, but it’s just wrapping up its fifth week – and the government said Friday it still has nine witnesses to call, down from the 14 it estimated the previous day.If the trial isn’t done by June 8, Walton said he may have to call a recess for about a month because of various scheduling conflicts.“And then we’ll have some real unhappy jurors,” Walton said mew era snapback hats.Clemens’ attorney Hardin spent three-plus days of cross-examination portraying McNamee as a chronic liar who frequently changes his story.Toward the end, Hardin raised numerous unsavory personal details: McNamee tampered with a dead body when he was a New York City policeman, he lied to investigators looking into a Florida incident in 2001, he had two driving-under-the-influence arrests in 2002, he got caught up in an Internet fraud investigation after ordering diet pills over the Web in 2004.“Would you agree that you had a severe drinking problem?” was among the many accusatory questions from Hardin.McNamee answered “No, sir” to that one.Even though McNamee never backed down from his core testimony that he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs from 1998 to 2001, prosecutors have their work cut out for them as they try to rebuild their key witness in front of the jury. The judge said he would allow only 90 minutes of follow-up questioning from prosecutors, and they used up 20 minutes of that allotment before court adjourned for the weekend. To bolster McNamee’s credibility, the government hopes to win an argument to include previously barred evidence that shows McNamee supplied drugs to other players who have since acknowledged that they were users.Hardin claimed that would open up a “bunch of mini-trials” over each player associated with McNamee and could extend the trial for months. The judge said he will rule on the matter Monday morning.Late Friday afternoon, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and its chairman, Rep fitted hats.Darrell Issa, filed a motion to quash Clemens’ subpoenas for Issa’s testimony and committee documents. That committee held the hearing that Clemens testified before in 2008; Issa, a California Republican, was not chairman at the time Jordy Nelson jersey. The motion argues that the subpoenas are barred by the Constitution’s speech or debate clause, which protects elected officials from being questioned in a lawsuit about their legislative work snapback hats for sale.AP Sports Writer Joseph White contributed to this report.Follow Fred Frommer at http://twitter.com/ffrommerFollow Joseph White at http://twitter.com/JGWhiteAPMore news

Off the Bench: Canseco hitless in Tornado debut

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

Recently, we’ve been paying more attention to Jose Canseco’s Twitter feed than his actual baseball career which he is still trying to continue.

Sadly for Jose, his debut didn’t exactly go the way that he would have liked it.Canseco went 0 for 2 at the plate with two walks and during his four total plate appearances, he didn’t put the ball in play:

The Tornadoes lost the game by the score of 9-2 and we’ll have to wait and see if the Canseco experiment will work out for better or worse

“We haven’t carried on the negotiations during the season because we don’t feel like it’s fair to Josh,” said Ryan, who pointed out general manager Jon Daniels spoke briefly with Hamilton’s agent during spring training.“And we don’t want to do something that will be a distraction.”

HBT: White Sox to sign Orlando Hudson

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

From Peter Gammons of MLB Network comes word that veteran second baseman Orlando Hudson has agreed to a contract (presumably of the non-guaranteed minor league variety) with the White Sox.

The Pale Hose will work Hudson into the mix at second base, where 25-year-old Gordon Beckham has struggled to provide consistent production since his breakout rookie season back in 2009

CSN: Oswalt a Phil again? Possible, not probable

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.won’t comment on a report that his club has scouted free-agent righthander Roy Oswalt.

Is it possible that Oswalt could return to the Phillies?

That’s tougher to answer.

As of right now, it does not appear that the Phils have a need for Oswalt, though that could change if Vance Worley does not make it back from the disabled list quickly.Things could also change if the Phils decide to package Joe Blanton in a deal for bullpen and or/offensive help.

And speaking of Philadelphia, one has to wonder if Oswalt would really want to come back snapback hats for sale.Let’s face it.He did not look like a guy whose heart was in Philadelphia last year.Maybe his mind was at home, with his family, in tornado-torn Mississippi. That was certainly understandable early in the season.Maybe his back problems left him a little detached.Whatever the case, Oswalt always looked like he had one foot out the door in Philadelphia authentic hats.In fact, his lightning quick exit from the clubhouse after the Phils were eliminated by St.Louis in Game 5 of the NLDS resembled a jail break and did not sit well with some teammates who were distraught after the loss 59fifty fitted hats.

One is his health. The Phillies know all too well how quickly his back can act up cheap snapback.

Yeah, the Phillies took a look at Roy Oswalt. But his return to the club is far from a sure bet

Giants get past A’s at home again

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Ryan Vogelsong had all of the answers except for what actually hit him during the San Francisco Giants’ key rally.Vogelsong allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings and drew a disputed hit by pitch in San Francisco’s four-run seventh as the Giants beat the Oakland Athletics for the 11th straight time at home, 4-0 on Saturday.Vogelsong (2-2) retired the first 13 batters he faced and allowed only a soft single to right-center by Seth Smith with one out in the fifth. But he was still locked in a scoreless duel with Tyson Ross before the Giants broke through in the seventh after the umpire ruled a ball hit Vogelsong despite claims from the A’s that it hit the bat instead.“I wasn’t acting.Something hit me in the chest, whether it was my bat or the ball, something made contact with me,” Vogelsong said.”I didn’t know what it was.I thought I got hit.”Buster Posey hit an RBI double and Angel Pagan added a two-run single in the big inning to help the Giants win for the sixth time in eight games NBA snapback hats. They also extended their home dominance over the A’s, who have not won in San Francisco since 2008.Emmanuel Burriss led off the seventh with an infield single between third base and shortstop.Giants manager Bruce Bochy then called back pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff from the on-deck circle to have Vogelsong try to lay down a bunt.Tyson Ross (2-4) threw high and tight and home plate umpire James Hoye ruled Vogelsong was hit by the pitch. The A’s argued that the ball hit Vogelsong’s bat.“I knew he was bunting.I tried to elevate a fastball to try and induce a popup or maybe get a double play.It kind of got away from me a little bit,” Ross said Jordy Nelson jersey.”I saw it hit the bat but the umpire saw it differently. That was a big spot in the game.Unfortunately he was awarded the base and you know what happened after that.”Grant Balfour came in and walked Gregor Blanco on four pitches before striking out Brandon Crawford for the first out snapback hats for sale.Melky Cabrera followed with a sacrifice fly.Posey extended the lead with a ground-rule double and Pagan’s single made it 4-0.“You have to capitalize on it,” Posey said.”We were able to do that.”Oakland manager Bob Melvin got ejected after arguing again with Hoye on his way to take out Balfour after Pagan’s hit cheap snapback hats.Melvin was also ejected Thursday in Texas after another argument, although plate umpire Laz Diaz later apologized to Melvin after acknowledging he missed the call. The A’s rallied to beat the Rangers in 10 innings in that game, but couldn’t overcome a disputed call this time to extend their longest losing streak in one stadium since dropping 12 in a row at Milwaukee from 1992-95.“At some point you have to move on and continue to play and try to shut it down,” Melvin said.”We tried to.They just ended up scoring some runs right there.”The game was scoreless after six innings even though the Giants put 10 runners on base to just two for the Athletics.Ross escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first by getting Pagan to pop up and striking out Brandon Belt to end a 31-pitch inning. He stranded two more runners in the second when he struck out Crawford. He then induced inning-ending double plays in the fifth and sixth from Cabrera and Joaquin Arias after putting runners on first and second.Vogelsong was helped early when Cabrera made a shoestring, backhand catch in left-center to rob Jemile Weeks of a hit to lead off the game. That was the closest the A’s came to a baserunner before Smith’s single.Josh Donaldson, who had five RBIs on Friday night, followed by hitting into an inning-ending double play as Vogelsong faced the minimum 15 batters through five innings cheap hats.Vogelsong pitched around a leadoff walk to Daric Barton in the sixth, the only other baserunner he allowed. He has allowed just three earned runs in 28 1-3 innings over his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 2.27, as he has picked up from his breakthrough All-Star season last year.“I think I need to do it for the whole season,” Vogelsong said.”That’s a big goal of mine for this season, to have another solid year and kind of put that beside me going forward.I still feel like I have a lot to prove.”NOTES: The only longer regular-season win streak over an opponent for the Giants at this ballpark came when they beat the Mets 12 straight times from 2000-03.But New York split two playoff games here in 2000…….Vogelsong walked in the second inning, giving Giants pitchers three walks in two games after having just two in the first 38 Jordy Nelson jersey….Tim Lincecum, who is 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA in seven starts against Oakland, pitches the series finale against Bartolo Colon.More news

HBT: Morrow dominates Mets in 3-hit shutout

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

The Mets were particularly vulnerable this afternoon with David Wright out of the starting lineup and Blue Jays’ right-hander Brandon Morrow took advantage, tossing a complete game three-hit shutout as part of a 2-0 victory.

It was the second shutout of the season for Morrow, which leads the majors, and the third of his career. The 27-year-old right-hander is now 5-1 on the year with an outstanding 2.63 ERA and 54/17 K/BB ratio in 61 2/3 innings over nine starts

Votto’s 3-run HR helps Reds beat Yankees

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) – Reds manager Dusty Baker went deep into his dominant bullpen to find someone who could put away the New York Yankees.Jose Arredondo worked out of a ninth-inning jam for his first major league save, Joey Votto hit a three-run homer and Cincinnati held on for a 6-5 victory Saturday.New York scored twice off Sean Marshall in the ninth, but Baker pulled his regular closer in favor of Arredondo and he got the job done.“I could have done without the drama, but we did win the game,” Baker said.Arredondo entered with two on and one out, and Derek Jeter grounded his first pitch to third.Cincinnati nearly turned a game-ending double play, but Jeter just beat the relay.Even Votto thought the Reds had it won – he clenched his fist when he caught the ball at first base, hoping the game was over.Curtis Granderson then fouled off a 3-0 pitch before topping a slow roller to Votto for the final out.“It wasn’t fun the way it ended,” Votto said.”Well, I take that back.It was fun the way it ended.Just a little bit nerve-racking at the end, but that’s part of wins and losses and it was nice for Jose to come in and pick us up.”Brandon Phillips got Cincinnati started with a run-scoring single and the Reds overcame Ivan Nova’s career-high 12 strikeouts to improve to 2-2 during their five-game visit to both New York ballparks this week.Homer Bailey (2-3) pitched effectively into the seventh inning for the second consecutive outing.Cincinnati then turned it over to its normally lights-out bullpen and held on to hand New York its fourth loss in five games.“We just didn’t get the last hit that we needed,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.”It’s good that we’re able to come back, but it’s frustrating that you get so close and lose.”Logan Ondrusek retired Jeter on a shallow fly with two on to end the seventh.Cuban flame-thrower Aroldis Chapman, hitting 99 mph on the stadium scoreboard, whiffed Granderson and Robinson Cano in a perfect eighth.Raul Ibanez doubled to start the ninth and scored on Nick Swisher’s single, snapping New York’s 0-for-22 skid with runners in scoring position.Marshall threw a called third strike past Russell Martin, but Andruw Jones singled to put runners at the corners and Jayson Nix singled to make it 6-5.That’s when Baker went to Arredondo.“I didn’t really like the matchup there at the end with all those righties coming up there against Marshall,” said Baker, who hinted that he might consider moving Chapman into the closer role soon.Martin and Nix homered for the Yankees on a beautiful, 74-degree day when three balls barely cleared the short porch in right field.Bailey, drafted seventh overall in 2004, was 0-1 in his previous four starts since beating the Cubs on April 20 for the franchise’s 10,000th victory. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out seven and walked one in his first outing at Yankee Stadium.“Overall, pitched a good game,” he said new era hats.”I’d be lying if I said the anticipation wasn’t there. The first couple pitches it looked like the plate was about 100 feet away.”With the score tied 2-all, No.9 batter Wilson Valdez singled leading off the Cincinnati fifth and Chris Heisey followed with a bunt single. One out later, Votto got just enough of an inner-half slider from Nova (4-2) to drive it over the auxiliary scoreboard in right-center atlanta braves hats.Five of Votto’s seven homers this season have come in the last seven games, including a three-homer performance Sunday against Washington that he capped with a game-ending grand slam.“I’m starting to make progress,” the 2010 NL MVP said mew era snapback hats.Nix homered in the bottom half to cut it to 5-3.An eighth-inning throwing error by Yankees reliever David Phelps led to Mike Costanzo’s sacrifice fly.Nova had no problem with the bruised and sprained right foot that knocked him out of Monday night’s start at Baltimore in the sixth inning.Flashing a sharp curve, he struck out eight in the first three innings and had 11 strikeouts after five, surpassing his previous career high of 10 Jordy Nelson jersey. The right-hander got himself in trouble with consecutive walks in the first and Phillips put the Reds ahead with an RBI single.Devin Mesoraco and Heisey both doubled in the second to make it 2-0 Jordy Nelson jersey. It was an early breakthrough for the Reds, silenced by 39-year-old Andy Pettitte in their first shutout loss of the season Friday night snapback hats for sale.Martin homered on the first pitch of the third and New York tied it on Ibanez’s two-out RBI double in the fourth.Nova allowed seven hits and two walks over six innings in his second loss since a 15-game winning streak.“I don’t care about strikeouts,” Nova said.”I don’t like the way I’m pitching right now.I’m making a lot of mistakes.”NOTES: The series finale Sunday features an excellent pitching matchup.Reds RHP Johnny Cueto (4-1, 1.89 ERA) faces Yankees ace CC Sabathia (5-1, 3.77).Cueto’s 2.20 ERA over the past two seasons is the best in the majors….Cincinnati rookie SS Zack Cozart, with one hit in his last 26 at-bats, was not in the lineup.Valdez started in his place and moved to third when Cozart entered for defense in the eighth….Costanzo got his first major league start (at DH) and singled in the sixth for his first career hit.More news

Cubs’ Wood returns to Wrigley to say goodbye new era hats

Posted by fittedhats - May 20th, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) – Kerry Wood’s first trip as a retired baseball player Saturday morning was one any dad can appreciate. He went to a little league game, which he described as awesome. And then hours later he stepped to a microphone near home plate at Wrigley Field as his now ex-teammates stood behind him.And Wood made another delivery, reeling off a long list of people he needed to thank for a major league career that spanned 14 years.Teammates, coaches, managers, his wife, his dad, trainers, former general manager Jim Hendry, team owners, and his friends on the clubhouse staff.“I’m going to miss you guys,” Wood said, dressed in a coat and tie instead of his familiar uniform with No new era snapback hats.34 on the back.”I’m going to miss everybody.”Wood retired following Friday’s game against the White Sox after striking out his final and only batter of the day baseball caps. The latest injury to his shoulder and another trip to the disabled list – his 16th – made it apparent that it was time to go.But he wanted a final chance to pitch at Wrigley Field before peeling off the uniform. And after all the hubbub Friday, he made it official Saturday in a ceremony about four hours before the Cubs met the White Sox.“You know when it’s time, the body was telling me and obviously the results were telling me,” Wood said after his formal remarks. The right-hander had an 0-2 record and an 8.31 ERA over 10 games this season and had struggled mightily after a return from the disabled list.“So I’ve got no regrets.I played this game as long as I could and as hard as I could. And I’m fine saying that.”Wood had plenty of memorable moments during his stay with the Cubs.He played with Chicago from 1998-2008 and then rejoined the team last season after a brief stint with the Indians and Yankees. There was the 20-strikeout game in his fifth major league start in 1998 and a couple of playoff wins in 2003 when the Cubs made a serious run at the World Series. But he said the one he’ll remember most came Friday after he struck out the White Sox’s Dayan Vicieo on three pitches new era snapback. As he left to a rousing ovation, his son Justin came out of the dugout and gave him a big hug new era hats.“You can’t put anything above that,” said Wood, who with his wife and three kids went for one more stroll in the Wrigley Field outfield Saturday. When he’s ready, Wood will have a job with the Cubs in some capacity, but he wasn’t ready to look that far ahead. He’s gotten numerous texts from all over the country and was saluted by former teammates and managers, who commended his perseverance.During Saturday’s ceremony the Cubs presented him with a picture of him and his son in that on-field embrace Friday and also a flag of his 20-strikeout game.Asked why he was so popular in Chicago – the fans often chanted “Ker-ry, Ker-ry,” as they did one last time Friday – Wood said he felt they appreciated all he went through to pitch, especially with so many injuries mew era snapback hats. And he first pitched at Wrigley when he was 20 years old, so he grew up in front of them.“This is something that I’ve dealt with since way back when.I’ve been battling injuries since after my first year,” said Wood, who missed the entire 1999 season after elbow surgery.“It made me who I was.If I didn’t have those injuries, I don’t think I would be the person I am.”Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, who is new to Chicago, said the latter part of a player’s career can be difficult, but that Wood handled it well.“The player evaluating himself properly in the context of the team can be tough. He’s able to step outside himself, view the situation, understand what he needed to do to make himself happy and sort of what was best for him and the club,” Epstein said cheap snapback.“I really admire what he was able to do.It’s unique.”More news
